Creative Composition - with Dr Dylan Rynhart
Gain the skills to compose & workshop your music with musicians
Each Wednesday (6:30-8pm) the 11th of May, for 9 weeks
in the Centre for Creative practices, 15 Pembroke Street Lower, Dublin 2.
Now in its fourth year, this unique course is geared towards helping
composers achieve their potential, by providing them with the skills
to compose music for professional musicians.
Over the nine weeks, the course looks at various forms of music and
methods of composition, but is primarily participant led, meaning that
the focus is tailored to the aesthetics and talents of the participants.
The participants are given exercises through the term and their compositions
are workshopped so that they can get as much practical advice as possible.
At the end of the term, each participant will be offered the opportunity to write
music for a small group of musicians and have their compositions performed
and professionally recorded which they can use to promote their work.
This is a unique opportunity for any composer, one that shouldn't be missed.
While participants are not required to play an instrument, they do need to
be able to present their music to the class, either as a recording / mock-up
or in notation. A good understanding of musical notation is recommended.
A fee of €250 will cover all tuition and musicians fees for the term

Here's what the Irish Times said:
Ray Comiskey - The Irish Times FUZZYLOGIC
ENSEMBLE Mouthpiece ****On this second CD by composer/ keyboardist Dylan Rynhart's Fuzzy Logic, his writing, though clearly by the same hand (six pieces are his, two by ensemble members Brian Wynne and Nick Roth), is an obvious advance on his fine debut. The voicings are richer and more varied and there's a particularly deft sense of proportion to the development of texture and counterpoint. Replacing cello, French horn and clarinet with tenor, soprano and electric bass has enhanced the ensemble, while solo options are increased not only by Joe O'Callaghan (guitar) and the brilliant Tom Arthurs (guesting on trumpet and flugelhorn), but also by Wynne (tenor) and Cathal Roche (soprano). And the complex ensembles, thanks to conductor Florian Ross, are among the best executed by an Irish jazz ensemble. Standout examples of a uniquely conceived project include Flip Shuffle, Dusty Time and The Difference between Light and Hard.
Thanks and enjoy the music !

The Irish Times "she described the one painting that Bessie had painted and how this painting was the only piece of art that she had ever created, the only real way we have of remembering her. She had taken one painting class, created one watercolour and so there were no more. When she died, she left the painting to them and it still hangs on their wall; they treasure it."
Dylan Rynhart (on the inspiration for Mouthpiece) FUZZYLOGICENSEMBLE,Ireland's largest and longest running contemporary improvising ensembles, fashion arrangements with a quirky beauty and rich orchestral palette to create a jazz sound beyond the big-band tradition. With composer Dylan Rynhart at the helm on Hammond organ, the group have been making an impression on the Irish jazz scene for the past six years with their lyrical and innovative signature style.

This concert, featuring international guest artists Florian Ross (Germany) and Tom Arthurs (UK), will premiere music from FUZZYLOGICENSEMBLE's latest album Mouthpiece, recorded in January of this year. Mouthpiece is an album made, as Rynhart says "to inspire others to make even the simplest sounds, just for the sheer joy it brings" inspired by a painting his grandmother created, her one and only painting, which lives on in his family home as a testament to the joy that art can bring to the observer and the listener, that creativity opens a door to the memory of moments, and that the creation of one piece of art can become a treasure like no other.
Mouthpiece will launch in the National Concert Hall on Wednesday 19th August at 8pm in the John Field Room.

Creative Music CompositionLearn to write the music you hear and have it performed
(A unique class in composition, where your pieces are performed live at the end of the term) This is a very special class offering participants the opportunity to learn about many different kinds of composers and their techniques, in a practical way. In this class we will look at many different styles and genres of music, and their different considerations. We will also look at practical music theory and the specifics of writing music for acoustic instruments and objects you might find lying around your house!
At the end of the term each class member will be given the opportunity to write music for a small group of professional musicians and have their music performed and recorded. This is a unique opportunity for any aspiring composer and one that shouldn't be missed.
While participants are not required to play an instrument, access to a keyboard instrument is recommended. A basic understanding of musical notation is required.

Fuzzy Logic Ensemble in the JMI
+
-
In the latest July-August issue of the JMI,
Kevin Stevens has written a great article reviewing the Bray Jazz Festival:
" Think Global, Play Local "
Below is the review he gave of
FuzzyLogic
Ensemble's performance in the Royal Hotel:
"Fuzzy Logic's afternoon gig at the Royal, where the band was joined by British trumpeter Tom Arthurs, was a tight, engaging display of challenging pieces by leader and composer Dylan Rynhart. Rynhart prefers the term 'orchestral jazz' to describe the band's music, reflecting his investigation of a sound range outside the big-band tradition. Tunes like 'Reflected Reasoning' and 'Spin Cycle' are extended, segmented pieces that offer intriguing textures - a unison line of voice and guitar, say, against a march of horns and Hammond organ - that constantly surprise and yet are always organic to the structure of the piece. The band was powerful and well-rehearsed, with notable contributions from all, especially Arthurs and alto saxophonist Nick Roth. Guitarist Joe O'Callaghan, drafted late to replace Lee Tobin, played superbly."

Fuzzy Logic Ensemble gets a Project New Work award
+
-
Last Friday the 20th of June I received notice that
FuzzyLogic
Ensemble were awarded a "Project New Work" award from the Arts Council.
This is huge, as it will go towards funding the mammoth recording project that we have planned for the latter end of this year.
Following the huge success of our Mouthpiece tour last May, this coming project will be a landmark in our development as an ensemble, specifically documenting our enormous work through the last four years and the seven years since our conception.
You can expect an exceptional piece of work sometime early in 2009, I can't wait!
Fuzzy Logic Ensemble and Tom Arthurs Mouthpiece Tour
+
-
FuzzyLogic
Ensemble's Mouthpiece tour took place between the 1st and the 8th of May.
It was a resounding success, a huge thanks to all the performers, to Roy Carroll for doing sound, especially to Joe O'Callaghan for taking over from Lee Tobin at the last minute and also a huge thanks to
Tom Arthurs. It was wonderful playing with you all, the music has never sounded better in the last seven years since the band's been together!.
I have recordings from all the performances and I'm sorting through them as we speak, I'll be mixing some of the best stuff and putting it up in the various places on
dylanrynhart.com and also
fuzzylogicensemble.com and the myspaces. Though be patient, there is so much good music it's going to take ages to make that selection.
Thanks also to the
I.M.C ,
Music Network and the
Arts council for all the help and support!
New Fuzzy Logic Ensemble Album
+
-
We have just received funding from the Arts council of Ireland, to record a second Fuzzy Logic Ensemble album. This will probably take place in September / October 2008 and will be an extensive project as we will be recording in the region of 16 extended compositions that the group have been performing over the past three years. It's really exciting! and I'm busy planning as we speak.
